Los Angeles (AP) -- The whiff of weed wafted down the Hollywood Boulevard as a large crowd gathered to honour the late reggae king Bob Marley, who has been awarded a star on the world famous Walk of Fame. February 6th would have been Marley's 56th birthday and fans were out in force to show their appreciation for the first reggae artist to be rewarded with a star on the legendary street. Always on hand to hand out the plaques and oversee the unveiling of the stars was honorary Mayor of Hollywood, Johnny Grant. He remembered Marley to the crowd as "the first Third World superstar, a Rasta prophet, and a revolutionary artist." After a 20-odd year career Marley tragically died from a short bout of cancer in 1981. In Hollywood to accept the award was Marley's widow Rita Marley, who was accompanied by two of her children, Stephanie and Robert Marley Jr. The Marleys and even Mayor Grant were handed artificial necklaces of artificial marijuana leaves, the 'wisdomweed' of practising Rastafaris. Although there was a heavy police presence, many members of the crowd indulged in a little of the herb in honour of the event. Tunes from some of Marley's 18 albums, made in large part with his band The Wailers, floated down the legendary boulevard in the Californian Babylon. Later in February the 20th Annual Bob Marley day will be celebrated in California and he will be receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy from the Recording Academy.
